Ambrosio de Morales was a famous Spanish historian. He was born in Cordoba, Spain, in 1513 and passed away there in September 1591. He spent his life studying and writing about the history of Spain.
After finishing his studies at important universities like the University of Salamanca and Alcalá, Ambrosio de Morales became a priest. He was very good at writing and history. Because of this, he was chosen to teach "Belles-Lettres" (which means beautiful writing and literature) at the University of Alcalá.
Becoming a Royal Historian
In 1574, King Philip II of Spain gave Ambrosio de Morales a very important job. He was made the official historian, or "chronicler," for the Kingdom of Castile. His main task was to continue a huge history book called Crónica General de España. This book had been started by another historian, Florián de Ocampo.
His Major Work
Ambrosio de Morales worked on the Crónica General de España for ten years. He wrote about events up to the time when the kingdoms of Castile and León joined together under King Ferdinand I. Later, one of his students, Sandoval, continued the history even further, bringing it up to the year 1079.
