Amelia is a community in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area defined by the government for counting people. It is not an officially incorporated city or town. In 2020, about 2,132 people lived in Amelia. It is part of the larger Morgan City area.
History of Amelia
The town of Amelia got its name from a sad love story. The first postmaster, who was in charge of the mail, named the town after his fiancée, Amelia Dupuis. Sadly, she passed away just before they were supposed to get married.
Geography of Amelia
Amelia is located in southern Louisiana. Its exact coordinates are 29.673361 degrees North and 91.103181 degrees West.
On the eastern side of Amelia, across a waterway called Bayou Boeuf, is the border of Assumption Parish. There you'll find the community of Boeuf, Louisiana. The larger town of Morgan City is located about 8 miles (13 km) to the west of Amelia.
The total area of Amelia is about 2.78 square miles (7.2 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 2.52 square miles (6.53 square kilometers). The rest, about 0.26 square miles (0.67 square kilometers), is water.
