The American Academy of Nursing (AAN) is a group for expert nurses. It helps improve healthcare for everyone. They do this by sharing new ideas and research about nursing. The AAN was started in 1973. It works closely with the American Nurses Association (ANA). The group also publishes a magazine called Nursing Outlook six times a year.
What the AAN Does
The AAN is a professional organization. Its main goal is to help shape health policy. This means they work to make healthcare better for people. They also improve how nurses do their jobs. They share important nursing knowledge. This helps both the public and the nursing profession.
Who Are the Fellows?
Members of the AAN are called Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). You are invited to become a Fellow if you are a leader. You must also have achieved great things in nursing. Most Fellows have advanced university degrees. This means they have studied nursing at a high level. There are about 2,500 Fellows in the AAN.
Living Legends
The AAN has a very special award. It is called the Living Legend designation. This is the highest honor the academy gives. To become a Living Legend, you must have been a FAAN for at least 15 years. As of 2012, 82 nurses have been named Living Legends.
