The American Academy of Nursing (AAN) is a special group for nurses. It was started in 1973. Its main goal is to help improve healthcare and nursing. They do this by sharing important knowledge about nursing. AAN works closely with the American Nurses Association (ANA). They also publish a magazine called Nursing Outlook every two months.
Nurses who are leaders and have achieved a lot in their field can be invited to join AAN. When they join, they are called "Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing" (FAAN). This is a big honor in the nursing world. Most Fellows have a high level of education, like a doctorate degree. As of 2014, there were about 2,300 members.
The highest award given by the Academy is called the "Living Legend" designation. To be considered a Living Legend, a nurse must have been a FAAN member for at least 15 years. By December 2012, 82 nurses had been named Living Legends.
