The American Can Company Building is a very old factory in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is now known as the American Can Lofts. This building was finished in 1921. It is made of concrete and has five floors. The factory was built by the American Can Company. It made machines that created cans, not the cans themselves. The factory closed in 1963.
Later, in 1965, another company used part of the building. After they left in 1978, the building was mostly empty. Only a few small businesses used it, like places that printed T-shirts or stored things.
Saving a Historic Building
In 2005, a company bought the American Can Company Building. They wanted to fix it up. The city helped them with a loan. The building needed a lot of cleaning because of old factory materials. The company got money from a special fund to help with this cleanup.
The owners wanted to make sure the building kept its historic look. In 2006, experts looked at the building. They decided it was important enough to be on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history.
Cincinnati's city planners also agreed it was a historic site. This happened in July 2007. A few months later, the building was officially added to the National Register.
New Life for the Building
The main idea was to turn the old factory into new homes. They also wanted to add small shops. The building was almost completely fixed up. It opened again in September 2011. Now, it is called the American Can Lofts. It is a great example of how old buildings can be given a new purpose.
