ALA Notable lists facts for kids
The American Library Association (ALA) announces special lists every January. These lists highlight some of the best books, recordings, and videos from the past year. They are part of the larger system of awards given by the ALA.

What Are ALA Notable Lists?
The ALA creates several "Notable Lists" each year. These lists help libraries and people find excellent materials to read, listen to, and watch. Different groups within the ALA choose the items for each list.
Notable Books for Adults
This list, started in 1944, is for grown-ups. A group of 12 librarians from the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) picks about 25 top books. These books can be fiction (made-up stories), non-fiction (true stories), or poetry. They are chosen because they are very good, easy to read, and sometimes very important.
Notable Books for Children
Since 1940, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has created this list. It highlights the "best of the best" books for kids. Books that win major awards, like the Newbery Medal, Caldecott Medal, Belpré Medal, Sibert Medal, Geisel Award, and Batchelder Award, are automatically added to this list.
Notable Recordings and Videos for Children
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) also makes two other lists for kids:
- Notable Children's Recordings (started 2004): This list features the best audio recordings for children. This could include audiobooks or music albums.
- Notable Children's Videos (started 2004): This list highlights the best videos for children. These might be movies or educational shows.
Notable Government Documents
This list, started in 1984, is chosen by the Government Documents Round Table (GODORT). It highlights important documents published by the government. This helps libraries find useful official information.
Notable Videos for Adults
Since 1998, the Video Round Table has created this list. It features about 15 outstanding video programs released in the past two years. These videos are chosen to be suitable for all libraries that serve adults.
