This film follows three young people. Each person is part of a unique spiritual group. They have chosen to make their spiritual beliefs the most important part of their lives. The movie shows how they live and practice their faith.

Meet the People in the Film

The documentary focuses on these three individuals:

  • Morpheus: She is a Pagan priestess, sometimes called a "witch." She moved to rural California. There, she works to create a special place for Pagans in her community.
  • Kublai: He is a Spiritualist medium. He lives and works on a farm in Upstate New York. He is learning to communicate with spirits. He does this through a local Spiritualist group.
  • Chuck: He is a Lakota Sioux man. He lives in South Dakota with his wife and child. They follow their traditional Lakota way of life. They often visit the Pine Ridge Reservation to take part in their tribe's customs.

How the Film Was Made

Making American Mystic took about two and a half years. Filming finished in early 2010. The movie was shot in different parts of the United States. These places included Upstate New York, northern California, and South Dakota.

The film was edited by Andy Grieve. He has worked on many other documentaries. The music for the film was created by Nathan Larson. He was a member of the band Shudder to Think.

Where to Watch American Mystic

American Mystic first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2010. After that, it was shown at several other film festivals. These included the Albuquerque Film Festival and the American Film Festival in Poland. It was also shown at the San Francisco DocFest.

The documentary also inspired a book. Alex Mar, the film's director, wrote the book called Witches of America. It was published in 2015. You can currently stream American Mystic on Netflix.
