History of the American Staffordshire Terrier
The American Staffordshire terrier first came from the British colonies in North America. This was during the 1800s. People bred these dogs for different purposes back then.
Early Ancestors and Names
The first dogs that led to the AmStaff were the bulldog and the terrier. Bulldogs were strong and sturdy dogs. Terriers were known for being quick and brave. When these two types of dogs were bred together, they created a new kind of dog. One of its early names was the Blue Paul terrier.
Changes in the 1900s
Later, in the 1930s, dog breeders continued to develop the breed. They bred it with the Pit bull terrier. This helped to shape the AmStaff into the dog we know today. The breed's name was officially changed to the American Staffordshire Terrier in 1972. This new name helped to show its American origins and its connection to the Staffordshire area in England, where some of its ancestors came from.
