Amma Kudineer facts for kids

Amma Kudineer means "Mother drinking-water" in the Tamil language. It was a special project in Tamil Nadu, India. This project made and sold bottled mineral water. The Government of Tamil Nadu ran this project to help people get clean drinking water easily.

What is Amma Kudineer?

The Amma Kudineer project officially started on September 15, 2013. It was launched by J. Jayalalithaa, who was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at that time. The launch happened on the 105th birthday of another former Chief Minister, C. N. Annadurai.

Why was the project started?

The main idea behind Amma Kudineer was to make clean, purified water available to everyone. It was sold in one-liter plastic bottles for only ₹10 (about 10 Indian Rupees). This was much cheaper than water sold by private companies. The water was mainly sold on long-distance government buses and at bus stations.

How was it made?

The project was managed by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. The water was produced at a factory in Gummidipoondi, located in the Thiruvallur district. This factory was quite large and could make 300,000 liters of purified water every day! The water was tested to make sure it was very clean, with very low levels of impurities.

Helping during disasters

Amma water bottles were also given out to people during natural disasters. For example, they were provided during the 2018 Kerala floods, the 2015 Chennai floods, and the Cyclone Gaja. This helped people get safe drinking water when their usual supplies were affected.

Success and challenges

The Amma Kudineer project was very popular and successful at first. Because it was so affordable, the demand for the water bottles grew quickly. This led to some places running out of stock because the supply couldn't keep up with how much people wanted to buy.

Current status

Right now, the sale of Amma Water bottles has stopped. This is because of a technical problem at the Gummidipoondi factory. The government has not announced any plans to fix the factory at this time.
