The Amos Bull House is a really old and special house in Hartford, Connecticut. It was built around 1788. This house is important because it's one of the few buildings from the 1700s still standing in Hartford! It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1968. Today, it's the main office for Connecticut Landmarks, a group that helps protect historic places.

Discovering the Amos Bull House

What Does the Amos Bull House Look Like?

The Amos Bull House is a two-and-a-half story building made of brick. It has a special roof called a gambrel roof, which has two different slopes on each side. The front of the house has three sections. The main door is on the left side.

The windows on the front are rectangular. They have special stone tops called splayed brownstone lintels. Look up at the roof! You'll see a fancy design called dentil molding along the edge. This same design is also on the dormer windows that stick out from the roof.

On the side of the house, there's a small window with a pointed top. Above it, closer to the roof, is an even smaller half-round window. Inside the house, there are only a few small parts left from when it was first built in the 1700s.

The History of the Amos Bull House

We don't know the exact year the Amos Bull House was built. But we know it was standing by 1791. That's when Amos Bull, who owned the house, advertised his dry goods business from that address. Dry goods were things like fabrics and clothing.

Amos Bull sold the house in 1820. After that, many different businesses used it. The house wasn't always in the same spot! It was first located on Main Street. In the early 1900s, it was moved back from the sidewalk. Later, it was moved again across the block to where it stands today.
