Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Amīnah al-Saʿīd also known as Amīnah Saʻīd (1914–1995; Arabic: أمينة السعيد) was an important Egyptian journalist and a strong supporter of women's rights. She made history by starting Egypt's very first magazine just for women. She was also the first woman to be an editor of a magazine in the entire Middle East.

Biography

Amīnah Saʿīd was born in Cairo, Egypt, on January 20, 1914. When she was 14 years old, she joined the youth group of the Egyptian Feminist Union. This group worked to improve the lives of women in Egypt.

She was one of the first women to attend Fuad I University in 1931. She studied English literature and earned her degree in 1935. Amīnah Saʿīd believed that women should have the freedom to choose what they wear. She even played tennis in public without a veil, which was a bold move at the time.

Later, she started working as a writer for the news magazine Al-Musawar. In 1954, she founded her own magazine called Hawaa. This made her one of the first women in Egypt to work full-time as a journalist.

From 1958 to 1969, she served as the secretary general of the Pan-Arab League Women's Union. This role allowed her to work for women's rights across many Arab countries. In 1973, she became the editor of Al-Musawar magazine. From 1976 to 1985, she led the group that published the magazine.

Amīnah Saʿīd passed away from cancer at the age of 81 on August 13, 1995, in Cairo.
