Ana María Cano González was born on May 12, 1950, in Villarín, a small place in Somiedo, Asturias, Spain. She is a Spanish expert in languages. People who study languages and how they change over time are called philologists.
Ana Cano used to be the main leader, or "dean," of the language department at the University of Oviedo. She also led studies about languages that came from Latin, like Spanish and Asturian.
Her Education and Work
Ana Cano first became a primary school teacher in 1967. After teaching for a while, she went to the University of Oviedo to study more. In 1972, she earned a degree in philosophy and letters.
She continued her studies and received her highest degree, a doctorate, in 1975. Her special project for this degree was about "The speech of Somiedo." This was a deep study of how people talk in her hometown.
Since 2001, Ana Cano has been the president of the Academy of the Asturian Language. This academy works to protect and promote the Asturian language, which is spoken in the Asturias region of Spain. She has also written several books about the Asturian language and its history.
