Ana Galvis Hotz (born June 22, 1855 – died November 2, 1934) was a very important person in Colombian history. She was the first woman from Colombia to become a medical doctor. This was a huge achievement, especially at a time when it was very hard for women to get a university education.

Who Was Ana Galvis Hotz?

Ana Galvis Hotz was born in Bogotá, Colombia. Her father, Nicanor Galvis, was Colombian. Her mother, Sophie Hotz, was from Switzerland. Ana was born on June 22, 1855.

Her Journey to Become a Doctor

In April 1872, Ana decided to study medicine. She enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bern in Switzerland. This was a big step because, at that time, women in Colombia could not even go to university.

Ana was the first full-time female student at the University of Bern. She worked very hard. On June 26, 1877, she earned her degree as a Doctor of Medicine. Her special paper was called Über Amnionepithel, which means On the Amniotic Epithelial.

This made Ana Galvis Hotz the first female doctor not just from Colombia, but also from all of Latin America and Spain!

Her Medical Work in Colombia

After finishing her studies, Ana returned to Colombia. She opened her own medical office. She told people she was a "specialist on the diseases of the uterus and its surroundings." This means she focused on women's health.

Because of this, Ana Galvis Hotz is also known as the first gynaecologist in Colombia. A gynaecologist is a doctor who specializes in women's reproductive health. She helped many women with her medical knowledge.

Ana Galvis Hotz passed away on November 2, 1934, in Bogotá. Her life showed that with determination, big dreams can come true. She opened doors for many women who came after her.
