Kids Encyclopedia Facts

André Souris (born July 10, 1899 – died February 12, 1970) was a talented Belgian musician. He was a composer, a conductor (someone who leads an orchestra), a musicologist (a person who studies music history and theory), and a writer. He was also connected to the surrealist movement, which was a style of art and writing that explored dreams and imagination.

A Young Musician's Journey

André Souris was born in Marchienne-au-Pont, Belgium. He started his music studies early, attending the Conservatory in Brussels from 1911 to 1918. He was a very good student, winning top awards in many subjects like music history, harmony, and violin.

After finishing his main studies, he continued to learn about composing and arranging music with a teacher named Gilson. In 1927, he won a special award called the Rubens prize. This prize allowed him to move to Paris, France. In Paris, he looked for other artists and musicians who were creating new and experimental types of art.

Later, in 1935, he took lessons to become a better conductor. From 1937 to 1946, he worked as a conductor for the radio in Belgium.

Changing Musical Styles

When he was younger, before 1923, André Souris wrote a lot of music that sounded like the famous French composer Claude Debussy. But then he discovered other kinds of music. He decided that his early works were not what he wanted to create anymore.

Instead, he found inspiration in the music of Erik Satie and Igor Stravinsky. These composers were known for their unique and sometimes unusual styles. André Souris joined a group of Belgian surrealist artists and writers. He started writing music that was sometimes very simple or even a bit strange on purpose. One of his first pieces in this new style was called Choral, marche et galop for four brass instruments, which he wrote in 1925.

André Souris lived in different countries, including Italy, France, and Austria. He passed away in Paris.
