Andrea Vinai was an Italian painter born in 1824 near Mondovì, a town in Piedmont, Italy. He lived until 1893. He is mostly known for his beautiful religious paintings found in many churches.

A Young Artist's Journey

When Andrea Vinai was a young boy, he began learning to paint in Cuneo, Italy. His first teacher was a painter named Pastore. Later, Andrea traveled to Rome, a very famous city known for its art. There, he studied at a special art school called the Academy of San Luca. He was a talented student and even won a scholarship to help him with his studies until 1848.

A Brave Soldier

In 1848, Andrea Vinai stopped his art studies to join the wars. These wars were very important because they helped Italy become an independent country. Andrea was a brave soldier and was even wounded in a battle near Treviso. Because of his courage, he was given a special medal for military bravery and rose to the rank of captain!

Painting for Churches

After the war, Andrea Vinai returned to his home region, Piedmont. He spent most of his time painting religious pictures for churches. For example, in the main church of Mondovì, he painted several important artworks:

  • The Coronation of the Virgin and Four Prophets in the special area near the altar.
  • San Francesco di Sales on the ceiling of the San Grato section.
  • Paintings for the Chapel of San Giuseppe.
  • Art for the Chapel of San Biagio.
  • The Cena Domini (Last Supper) in the second chapel on the left.

Andrea Vinai also created many religious paintings for churches in other towns. Some of these places include Saluzzo, Ceva, Carassone, Pallare, Nole, Sommariva Perno, Boves, Carrù, Santa Vittoria d'Alba, Madonna dell'Olmo near Cuneo, Peveragno, Trinità, Garessio, and Cuneo. He completed many religious paintings in Cuneo, Mondovì, Novara, Alessandria, Chiusa di Pesio, and Casale Monferrato. In 1846, he painted portraits of the King and Pope Pio IX for the Crematorium of Turin. Andrea Vinai also shared his artistic knowledge by teaching art in public schools.
