Andriy Mykolayovich Kotelnyk (also known as Andreas Kotelnik) is a famous former boxer from Ukraine. He was born on December 29, 1977. Andreas is the German way of saying Andriy. He competed as a professional boxer from 2000 to 2014. During this time, he became a world champion, holding the WBA super-lightweight title. Before turning professional, he was an amateur boxer. Andreas Kotelnik had a very successful amateur boxing career before becoming a professional.
Early Wins and Championships
- In 1995, he won the Junior European Championship. He competed in the flyweight division in Siofok, Hungary.
- In 1997, he competed at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. He was in the featherweight category.
- He won against Kenneth Buhlalu from South Africa on points.
- He also won against Roman Rafael from Slovakia because his opponent did not show up.
- He later lost to Falk Huste from Germany on points.
Olympic Success in 2000
- In 2000, Andreas won a silver medal at the Sydney Olympics. He competed in the lightweight division.

Andreas Kotelnik's Professional Boxing Career
Andreas Kotelnik started his professional boxing journey in December 2000. He had many exciting fights and became a world champion.
Starting Strong and Winning Titles
Andreas made his professional debut on December 16, 2000. He won his first fight by knocking out Peter Feher in the very first round. On January 24, 2003, he won his first big title. This was the WBA Inter-Continental light-welterweight title. He won it by a unanimous decision against Fabrice Colombel. This means all the judges agreed he won. He defended this title two times.
His first professional loss happened on October 21, 2004. He lost to Souleymane M'baye by a split decision. This means some judges thought he won, and others thought his opponent won. On July 9, 2005, he tried to win the European light-welterweight title but lost to Junior Witter. However, he bounced back quickly! On November 26, 2005, he won back the WBA Inter-Continental title. He also won the WBO Asia Pacific light-welterweight title by beating Muhammad Abdullaev.
Becoming a World Champion
Andreas had a rematch with Souleymane M'baye on March 30, 2007. This time, M'baye's WBA light-welterweight world title was on the line. The fight ended in a split draw, meaning the judges couldn't agree on a winner, and it was a tie.
Almost exactly a year later, on March 22, 2008, Andreas Kotelnik achieved his dream. He won the WBA world title by stopping the champion, Gavin Rees, in the twelfth and final round. This was a technical knockout. He successfully defended his world title two times. First, he won against Norio Kimura on points on September 13, 2008. Then, he had a very close fight against future world champion Marcos Maidana on February 7, 2009, winning by a split decision.
Later Career and Retirement
In his third title defense, Andreas lost his WBA world title to Amir Khan on July 18, 2009. He lost by a unanimous decision. After taking a break from boxing for over a year, he returned on August 7, 2010. He faced Devon Alexander, who held two other world titles. Andreas lost this fight on points, but many people thought he should have won.
After more than four years away from the sport, Andreas Kotelnik had his final fight on October 4, 2014. He won this farewell match against Alexander Benidze on points. He ended his professional career with a great record.
