The company was started by Albrecht Ludvig Schmidt (1754–1821). He was born in Kiel but later moved to Copenhagen. There, he became a successful merchant who bought and sold goods in large amounts.
In 1793, Schmidt teamed up with another merchant named Andresen. Andresen traded with places like Danish India. Together, they created Andresen & Schmidt. Their business was located at Schmidt's property in Copenhagen. This was at the corner of Ved Stranden and Holmens Kanal.
Trading Ships and Adventures
Andresen & Schmidt was also known as Rederiet Schmidt og Andresen. This means "The Shipping Company Schmidt and Andresen." The company owned many merchant ships. These ships sailed far across the oceans. They traded goods with countries in India and also with Canton (now Guangzhou) in China.
During a time called the Gunboat War, the company helped Denmark. They invested in "privateering" vessels. These were private ships that were allowed to attack enemy ships during the war. This helped Denmark's navy.
