Andrew Baynton facts for kids
Sir Andrew Baynton (born around 1516, died 1564) was an important English scholar and politician during the time of King Henry VIII and his children.
Early Life and Education
Andrew Baynton was the son of Sir Edward Baynton, who lived in Bromham, Wiltshire. His father was a well-known person at the royal court of King Henry VIII. Sir Edward was a close friend to the King and also helped look after three of the King's queens. He was also a friend and supporter of Hugh Latimer, a famous religious leader of that time.
When Andrew was young, his father made sure he received a good education. He studied French with John Palsgrave, who was a tutor at the royal court. Andrew even wrote an introduction for one of his teacher's books about the French language, published in 1530. Around the same time, he also traveled with a diplomat named Knyvett on an important trip from King Henry VIII to the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. This trip was like a special mission to another country.
A Career in Parliament
After his father passed away around 1544, Andrew Baynton took over the family's responsibilities. He became a Member of Parliament (MP), which means he was chosen to represent different areas in the English government. Being an MP meant he helped make laws and decisions for the country.
He represented several towns in Parliament:
- Marlborough in 1545
- Horsham in 1547
- Westbury in October 1553
- Marlborough again in 1555
- Calne in 1558–1559
This shows he was a trusted and active member of the government for many years.
Family Life
Sir Andrew Baynton was married twice. His first wife was Phillipa Brulet. Later, in 1562, their marriage was ended. He then married Frances Lee. Andrew and Frances had one daughter named Anne.
However, Anne did not inherit the main family properties and wealth. Sir Andrew had arranged for his estates to be passed down to his brother, Edward Baynton (who lived from 1517 to 1593), instead of his daughter. This was a common practice in those times to keep large family lands together.
