Andrew Johnston (born 1770 – died August 28, 1833) was an important surgeon in Ireland. He became the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1817. The RCSI is a famous college for training doctors and surgeons.

Andrew Johnston's Life

Early Training

Andrew Johnston began his medical training in 1791. He studied with a well-known surgeon named William Hartigan. Johnston attended the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). At that time, the college was located on Mercer Street in Dublin. On December 3, 1794, he successfully passed his final exams. This meant he was qualified to work as a surgeon.

Serving in the Army

After qualifying, Andrew Johnston joined the army. He became a surgeon for the 44th Regiment of Foot. This was a military unit of the British Army. He traveled and worked in different parts of the world. Johnston served in the West Indies, which are islands in the Caribbean Sea. He also served in Egypt.

A Leader in Medicine

Andrew Johnston left the army in 1803. He then became a full member of the RCSI in 1805. His career at the college continued to grow. In 1813, he was chosen to be a Professor of Surgical Pharmacy. This role involved teaching about medicines used in surgery. Later, in 1819, he became a Professor of Midwifery. This meant he taught about helping women during childbirth. Andrew Johnston also served as the Treasurer for the college for many years. This role meant he managed the college's money.
