Early Life and Becoming a Priest
Andrzej Suski was born in Płock, Poland, on December 24, 1941. He studied to become a priest at the Seminary in Płock. On May 31, 1965, he was officially made a priest by Bishop Bogdan Sikorski.
His Work as a Bishop
On November 20, 1985, Pope John Paul II chose Suski to be an Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Płock. An Auxiliary Bishop helps the main bishop. He also became a Titular Bishop of Thimida Regia, which is a special title.
On January 6, 1986, he became a bishop in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Pope John Paul II led the ceremony.
Bishop of Toruń
On March 25, 1992, Pope John Paul II changed the church areas in Poland. A new area called the Diocese of Toruń was created. Andrzej Suski was chosen to be its very first Bishop.
He led the Diocese of Toruń for 25 years. During this time, he helped build up many church groups and services. He also helped create new church communities called parishes. Bishop Suski worked to make Catholic education and media stronger in the region.
He supported the start of a Catholic newspaper called Niedziela Toruńska. He also helped the Radio Maryja community grow in Toruń.
Retirement
On November 11, 2017, Bishop Suski retired. He was 75 years old, which is the usual age for bishops to retire. Pope Francis accepted his resignation. After he retired, Wiesław Śmigiel became the new Bishop of Toruń.
His Legacy
Bishop Suski is remembered for his strong dedication to his church community. He was good at organizing things and was very loyal to the teachings of the Church. Many saw him as a strong supporter of traditional Catholic values. He also had close connections with conservative groups within the Polish Church.
