Anaiwan (also called Anēwan) is an Aboriginal language from New South Wales, Australia. Sadly, it is no longer spoken every day. However, since 2017, people have been working hard to bring the language back to life. This is called a language revival program.

Where Does Anaiwan Come From?

Anaiwan is part of a very large group of languages called Pama–Nyungan. This is one of the biggest language families in Australia. Experts like Bowern (in 2011) say that Anaiwan is its own special branch within this big family. One important form of Anaiwan is called Nganyaywana.

Different Ways of Speaking Anaiwan

The Anaiwan language might have had different ways of speaking, known as dialects. One of these is Enneewin. Enneewin shares about 65% of its words with Nganyaywana.

Some experts, like Crowley (in 1976), thought Nganyaywana and Enneewin were completely separate languages. But others, like Wafer and Lissarrague (in 2008), believed they were just different dialects of the same language. This means they were like different versions of Anaiwan.
