Angharad ferch Meurig was an important Welsh noblewoman who lived in the 800s. She was married to Rhodri the Great, who was a very powerful ruler in Gwynedd, a kingdom in Wales. Angharad was also the mother of three sons who became important rulers: Anarawd, Cadell ap Rhodri, and Merfyn.
Her Life
Angharad's father was Meurig, who was the King of a place called Seisyllwg in southwestern Wales. Her family was very old and important, tracing back to a famous ancestor named Cunedda.
She married Rhodri Mawr (also known as Rhodri the Great). He was a very powerful king who ruled over a large part of Wales.
Angharad had a brother named Gwgon. He became king of Seisyllwg after their father. But sadly, Gwgon drowned in 872 and didn't have any children to take his place. Because of this, Angharad and Rhodri became the temporary rulers, or 'caretakers,' of Seisyllwg.
Rhodri couldn't become king of Seisyllwg himself, even though he was powerful. But because Angharad was from the royal family of Seisyllwg, they could make their second son, Cadell, the new king there.
Their first son, Anarawd, later took over as king of Gwynedd after his father, Rhodri. Their third son, Merfyn, is thought by some to have become the King of Powys, another Welsh kingdom.
