Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Angiola Teresa Moratori Scanabecchi (born in 1662, died on April 19, 1708) was a talented Italian composer and painter. She lived during a time called the Baroque period, known for its grand and dramatic art and music.

Her Life Story

Angiola Moratori was born in Bologna, a city in Italy. Her father was a doctor from Bologna. She later married a man named Tomaso Scanabecchi Monetta.

Angiola was very artistic and studied many things. She learned to play musical instruments, sing, and paint. She also composed, which means she wrote her own music. She created special musical pieces called oratorios, which are like plays set to music, usually with a religious story. Sadly, the actual musical notes for these works have been lost over time.

Angiola was also a skilled painter. Her paintings can still be found in churches today. Some of her works are in Santo Stefano in Bologna, San Giovanni in Monte in Bologna, and Madonna di Galliera in Bologna. Another painting is in San Domenico in Ferrara.

Angiola Scanabecchi passed away in Bologna. She is buried in the Madonna di Galliera church, right beneath one of her own paintings, which shows Saint Tommaso.

  • Il martirio di Santo Colomba (1689)
  • Li giochi di Sansone (1694)
  • L’Esterre (1695)
  • Cristo morto (1696)
