A Look Back: The History of Angus
How Angus Got Its Start
Angus wasn't always called Angus! It was first known as "Coaltown." This name made sense because it was a place where people dug for coal. It became a busy coal mining community in the 1870s.
From Coaltown to Angus
- In 1879, a post office opened in Coaltown. This meant people could send and receive mail there.
- Just two years later, in 1881, the name of the community changed to Angus.
- The new name, Angus, was chosen to honor someone important from the railroad company.
- The post office stayed open for many years but finally closed down in the 1950s.
People Who Lived Here
In 1940, about 150 people lived in Angus.
