Biography
Anjelika Akbar was born as Anjelika Rosenbaum into a Jewish family. Her mother was a professional musician. Her father, Stanislav Konstantinovich Timchenko, was a philosopher who also led an orchestra.
Anjelika showed her musical talent very early. She could play the piano and read music before she was three years old! She started taking private piano lessons at age three. Her first teacher was V. Lipovetsky, who helped start the Chinese Harbin Conservatory. He also taught at the famous Moscow Conservatory.
When she was four, people discovered she had something called absolute pitch. This means she could tell the exact note of any sound she heard. Because of this special skill, she was accepted into the Uspkensky State Music School. This was a special Soviet school for child prodigies, which are kids with amazing talents. Musicians from the Moscow State Conservatory became very interested in her.
She continued her studies at the Tashkent part of the same school. Other talented young musicians, like Alexei Sultanov and Stanislav Ioudenitch, also studied there.
Anjelika spent 11 years studying piano and composition. She learned from many great teachers at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory. After that, she went to the Tashkent State Conservatory. There, she studied composition, orchestration (how to write music for an orchestra), and piano for five more years. This helped her complete her musical education.
Career
Anjelika Akbar moved to Turkey in 1990. She went there to write music for a film about world ecology. She and her husband decided to stay in Turkey and became Turkish citizens.
She earned her Master’s Degree in composition and orchestral conducting at Hacettepe State Conservatory in Turkey. She also completed a special program that is like a doctorate for composers.
In 1999, Akbar released her first album called "Su" (which means "Water"). It featured her own piano pieces called preludes.
A big moment in her career was in 2002. She released the first solo piano version of Vivaldi's famous "Four Seasons". This was a first in classical music history! Sony Music International published it. It became the first Turkish Classical Music album in Sony Classical's collection. Also in 2002, Anjelika Akbar performed on the album "Bir'den Bir'e" with Rana Erkan and Zara.
Since 2003, she has been working with composer Ali Darmar. In the same year, she released her album "Bach A L'Orientale". On this album, she mixed the music of Bach with sounds from Oriental instruments.
In November 2005, she released another album called "Bir Yudum Su" (A Drop of Water). This album included her own compositions and arrangements.
Anjelika Akbar has performed many of her own works. She performed her Piano Concerto No.1, called "Sevgi Çemberi" (Circle of Love), for the first time at the 10th International CRR Piano Festival. Her symphonic poem "Kutsal İmler" (Sacred Signs) was also performed. This piece was written for Indian instruments and a symphonic orchestra. It was played at the Atatürk Cultural Center.
She also composed a special piece for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkey's first president. It was called "Güneşin Doğduğu Ufuk" (Horizon where the Sun Rises). This rhapsody for piano and symphonic orchestra was performed for the first time by the Symphonic Orchestra of Turkey.
In total, Anjelika Akbar has composed over 400 musical works. These include pieces for chorus, piano, other instruments, and both symphonic and chamber orchestras. She has performed in many concerts around the world. These countries include Russia, France, Germany, the Baltic Countries, Central Asia, India, Qatar, Turkey, and Northern Cyprus.
In November 2009, she was featured in an article in Skylife, the official magazine of Turkish Airlines. In March 2016, she composed and directed the music for a digital art exhibition.
