Anna Bailey Coles (born 1925, died February 3, 2015) was a very important leader in nursing education. She was the first dean, or head, of the College of Nursing at Howard University. She helped shape how nurses were taught for many years.
Early Life and Education
Anna Bailey Coles was born in Kansas City. She started her career helping people right away. From 1950, she worked for eight years at a hospital in Topeka, Kansas. This hospital cared for veterans, who are people who have served in the military.
While working, Anna Coles also continued her own education. She earned her first college degree, a Bachelor of Science (BS), in 1958 from Avila College in Missouri. She then went on to get more advanced degrees. She earned her Master of Science (MS) in 1960 and her PhD in 1967, both from the Catholic University of America. These degrees showed her deep commitment to learning and to the field of nursing.
Leading Nursing Education
From 1961 to 1968, Dr. Coles was the director of nursing at Freedman's Hospital. This was a big responsibility, as she oversaw all the nursing activities there.
A major change happened in 1969. The U.S. Congress passed a law to move the nursing school from Freedman's Hospital to Howard University. This was a big step for nursing education. Because of her experience and leadership, Anna Coles was chosen to become the first dean of the new School of Nursing at Howard University. As dean, she was in charge of the entire nursing program, guiding students and teachers.
Her Lasting Legacy
Anna Bailey Coles passed away on February 3, 2015. She left behind a wonderful legacy. To honor her work and dedication, a special scholarship fund was created in her name at Howard University's College of Nursing. This fund helps future nursing students get their education, continuing Dr. Coles's mission of supporting nurses.
