Anna Banti (born Lucia Lopresti; June 27, 1895 – September 2, 1985) was an important Italian writer, art historian, critic, and translator. She is best known for her historical novel about the artist Artemisia Gentileschi.

Life and Works
Anna Banti was born in Florence, Italy. When she was young, she spent time in Rome and Bologna. She studied at the University of Rome. Later, she returned to Florence permanently. At the university, she earned a degree in art history. Her pen name, Anna Banti, came from a very beautiful woman she knew when she was young.
In 1930, she married the famous art critic Roberto Longhi. In 1950, they started an art magazine together called Paragone. They both worked as editors for this magazine, which came out every two months.
Over the years, Anna Banti wrote many stories and books. Her most famous work was a historical novel about the painter Artemisia Gentileschi. This book helped people become interested in Artemisia's life and art again. When Banti passed away, a newspaper even used the headline Addio, Artemisia (Goodbye, Artemisia) to show how important this book was.
In 1981, Anna Banti published her autobiographical book, Un Grido Lacerante. This book won the Antonio Feltrinelli prize, a very important award. Besides being a successful author, Banti was also known for her work as a critic of literature, movies, and art. After her husband, Roberto Longhi, died in 1970, she took over his role as the editor of Paragone magazine.
Anna Banti died on September 2, 1985, in Massa. She is buried at the Cimitero degli Allori in Florence.
