Anna Dodsworth (born Anna Barrell, around 1740–1801) was a British poet from the Romantic period. Her poems have become more popular in recent times.

About Anna Dodsworth

Early Life and Marriage

Anna Barrell's mother passed away when Anna was young. Her father, Francis Barrell, took care of her education. She started writing poems at age seventeen. One of her first poems was an elegy, a sad poem, written for her brother.

Soon after, she married Frank Dodsworth. He was a vicar, a type of priest, in Dodington, Kent. Their marriage lasted for 43 years, until Anna's death in 1801. They did not have any children.

Her Writings

Anna Dodsworth wrote poems for her friends and family. She also wrote clever poems that commented on society. Her only collection of poems was called Fugitive Pieces. Her husband published it after she died. He printed only a small number of copies for their close friends.

Her husband wrote a note in the book. He explained that Anna wanted her poems published to raise money for a hospital. However, he felt the poems were not quite finished. He decided to share them only with friends who already loved her work. He wanted to honor his wife, who had brought him 43 years of happiness.

Anna Dodsworth's poems have been included in several collections since then. These include Women Romantic Poets: 1785-1832 and British Satire, 1785-1840. This means her work is still important to study today.
