Dame Anna Patricia Lucy Hassan (born in 1946 in Northern Ireland) is a well-known British educator. She is currently a Consultant Head at Daubeney Primary School. Before this, she was the Executive Head of Millfields Community School in Hackney, London, where she helped turn the school around.

Anna Hassan started her journey in education many years ago.

  • 1963: She began her teacher training at Coloma College in West Wickham, Kent. This was a special school for training Catholic teachers.
  • 1967: After finishing her training, she started her first teaching job at St Joseph's Primary School in Southwark, London.
  • 1979: After taking some time off to raise her son, she returned to teaching. She worked in different schools across Hackney.
  • 1983: She became the deputy head at Grasmere School in Hackney. Later, she was promoted to headteacher of the same school.
  • 1993: Anna Hassan was asked to take over Millfields Community School. This was a big challenge, as the school needed a lot of improvement.
  • 2009: She retired from her full-time role at Millfields. However, she continued to work as a consultant, sharing her knowledge with other schools.

Millfields Community School was once one of the lowest-performing schools in London. When Anna Hassan took charge in 1993, she worked hard to improve it. It took about twelve years, but she successfully helped the school become much better academically. This means students started doing much better in their studies and exams.

About Anna Hassan's Life

Anna Patricia Lucy Fusco was born and grew up in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland. Her parents were from Italy. Before becoming a teacher, she helped manage her family's ice-cream shops. However, she soon realized her true passion was teaching.

In 1971, she married Nevzat Hassan, who is a Turkish Cypriot Muslim. Anna Hassan is a Roman Catholic. They have one son named Dogan, who was born in London in 1972.

Awards and Recognition

Anna Hassan has received special honours for her important work in education.

  • 2005: She was given an honorary fellowship from the University of Gloucestershire. This is a special award from a university to recognize someone's achievements.
  • 2006: For her great service to education, Anna Hassan was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. This is a very high honour in the United Kingdom, and it means she can use the title "Dame" before her name.
