Anna Jókai (in Hungarian: Jókai Anna) was a famous Hungarian writer, poet, and teacher. She was born in Budapest, Hungary, on November 24, 1932. Anna Jókai started writing professionally in 1974. She also played a part in important changes happening in Hungary during the 1980s. From 1990 to 1992, she was the leader of the Hungarian Writers' Union. She passed away on June 5, 2017, in Budapest.
About Anna Jókai
Anna Jókai was born in Budapest, Hungary. From a young age, she showed a strong interest in writing stories. However, when she was sixteen, she stopped trying to become an author. She did not start writing again until seventeen years later.
During her school years, Anna had different jobs. She worked in accounting and also as a teacher. For most of the 1950s, she worked as a writer with support from the government. In 1956, she went to university to study. She graduated in 1961 with degrees in Hungarian literature and history. After that, she worked as a junior teacher in Budapest until 1970.
Her Career as a Writer
From 1971 to 1974, Jókai worked as a high school teacher. While teaching, she also wrote many books. Between 1968 and 1977, she wrote five books and four novels. More and more readers became interested in her work. By 1974, she became a full-time author and writer.
Anna Jókai was also a leader in the writing community. From 1986 to 1989, she was the chairman of the Hungarian Writers Association. Later, from 1990 to 1992, she was the chancellor of the Hungarian Writers' Union. This means she held important leadership roles for writers in her country.
Awards and Recognition
Anna Jókai received a very important award in Hungary. She was given the Hungarian Kossuth award twice. She received it in 1994 and again in 2014. This award is one of the highest honors for artists and writers in Hungary.
