Life and Career of a Dutch Novelist
Geertruida Toussaint was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands. This was on September 16, 1812. Her father was a pharmacist, which is someone who prepares and sells medicines. He made sure she got a good education.
Early Life and Love for History
From a young age, Geertruida loved to learn about history. She spent a lot of time indoors because she wasn't very strong. This gave her more time to read and study. Her interest in history helped her become a great writer.
Her First Books and Big Success
Her first book, Almagro, came out in 1837. After that, she wrote many other stories. These included De graaf van Devonshire (1838) and De Engelschen te Rome (1840).
One of her most famous early books was Het Huis Lauernesse (1841). This story was about the Protestant Reformation. It was so popular that it was translated into many different languages. Her books showed that she knew a lot about history. She was also very good at telling a story in her native Dutch language.
Later Works and Marriage
From 1840 to 1850, Toussaint continued her studies. This led to a series of three novels published between 1851 and 1854. These books were about Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester's adventures in the Netherlands. The series included Leycester in Nederland and Vrouwen van het Leycestersche Tydperk.
In 1851, she married Johannes Bosboom. He was a Dutch painter. After her marriage, she became known as Mrs Bosboom-Toussaint.
Changing Styles of Writing
After 1870, Geertruida Bosboom-Toussaint started writing different kinds of books. She moved from historical novels to stories about modern society. However, her later books, like Delftsche Wonderdokter (1871) and Majoor Frans (1875), were not as successful as her earlier historical works. Majoor Frans was translated into English in 1885.
All her novels were later collected and published together. This happened between 1885 and 1888. She passed away in The Hague on April 14, 1886.
