Anna Maria Arduino (1672–1700) was an important Italian woman. She was a regent, which means she ruled a place for a young prince who was too young to rule himself. She was also a socialite, meaning she was active in high society, and a talented painter and writer. She served as the regent of the Principality of Piombino from 1699 to 1700.

Who Was Anna Maria Arduino?

Anna Maria Arduino was born in 1672 in Messina, Italy. Her parents were Giovanna Furnari and Paolo Arduino. Her father was a prince and a marquis. This means her family was part of the nobility, a group of important families in Sicily.

Early Life and Education

From a young age, Anna Maria was very smart and creative. She loved to write. She even used a special pen name, or pseudonym, called Getilde Faresia for her writings and studies.

In 1697, she became a member of the Pontifical Academy of Arcadia (Accademia dell'Arcadia). This was a famous group of writers, poets, and artists in Italy. It showed how talented she was.

Marriage and Family Life

In 1697, Anna Maria married Giovan Battista Ludovisi. He was the Prince of Piombino. They lived in Rome and had a son named Niccolò II Ludovisi.

Becoming a Regent

In 1699, Anna Maria's husband, Prince Giovan Battista, passed away. Their young son, Niccolò II Ludovisi, became the new Prince of Piombino. However, because Niccolò was still a child, he could not rule on his own.

This is when Anna Maria Arduino stepped up. She became the regent for her son. This meant she was in charge of the Principality of Piombino until he was old enough to rule himself. She held this important position from 1699 to 1700.

A Short Life

Sadly, Anna Maria's son, Niccolò II, also passed away in 1699, just a few months after his father. Anna Maria Arduino herself died shortly after, on December 29, 1700, in Naples, Italy. She was only 28 years old.

She was buried in the church of San Diego all'Ospedaletto, Naples. Her grave is shared with her son. Their tombs have beautiful marble carvings, called bas-reliefs, made by the artist Giacomo Colombo. These carvings show her son and a picture of Anna Maria.
