Anna of Brandenburg was an important duchess who lived a long time ago, from 1507 to 1567. She became a duchess when she married Duke Albert VII of Mecklenburg. Her life shows us what it was like to be a noblewoman in the 1500s.
Early Life and Family
Anna was born on January 1, 1507. She was the oldest daughter of Joachim I. He was an "Elector" of Brandenburg. This meant he was a powerful ruler who helped choose the Holy Roman Emperor.
Anna's mother was Elizabeth. She was a princess from Denmark. Her father was King John of Denmark.
Marriage and Duchess Life
Anna married Duke Albert VII of Mecklenburg in Berlin. Their wedding took place on January 17, 1524. When she married, Anna brought a "dowry" with her. A dowry was like a special gift of money or property. The bride's family gave it to her husband.
Anna's dowry was 20,000 guilders. In return, she received a "jointure." This was land and towns, like Lübz and Crivitz. This land would support her if her husband passed away.
Later Years and Legacy
Duke Albert VII died in 1547. After his death, Anna moved to Eldenburg Castle in Lübz. This was her "widow's seat." It was a place set aside for her to live as a duchess who had lost her husband.
Anna passed away on June 19, 1567. She was buried in Schwerin Cathedral. This was according to her will, which she wrote in 1557.
