Annapolis, Ohio facts for kids
Annapolis is a small, unincorporated community located in Salem Township, within Jefferson County in the U.S. state of Ohio. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or a village. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county or township.
History
Annapolis wasn't always called Annapolis! When it was first planned out on a map, or platted, in 1802, it was known as New Salem. Think of "platting" as drawing the first blueprint for a town, showing where streets and lots would be.
A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, was opened in New Salem in 1815. A few years later, in 1823, the name of the community and the post office officially changed to Annapolis. The post office served the community for many years before it finally closed its doors in 1914. Besides the post office, Annapolis also had a country store, which was an important place for people to buy supplies and gather in the early days.
