Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lady Anne Dick (died 1741) was a Scottish noblewoman and a poet. She was known for her unique personality and for writing verses that sometimes surprised her friends.

About Lady Anne Dick

Lady Anne Mackenzie was born into an important Scottish family. Her grandfather was George Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Cromartie, a powerful figure. Her father, James Mackenzie, Lord Royston, was a Scottish judge.

Anne married William Cunyngham. In 1728, William inherited a lot of money when his mother's grandfather passed away. Because of this new wealth, William and Anne changed their last name to Dick. They became known as Sir William Dick and Anne, Lady Dick.

Her Unique Style

Lady Anne was known for being quite unusual for her time. She once caused a stir in Edinburgh by appearing in public dressed as a boy, along with her maidservant. This was very unexpected for a noblewoman in those days.

She also wrote poems and songs called "lampoons" that were sometimes very direct or sarcastic. Some people found these writings a bit shocking or embarrassing. A few of her works were published in a book called Book of Ballads in 1823 and 1824.

Later Life

Lady Anne Dick passed away in 1741. She did not have any children. Her husband, Sir William Dick, died a few years later in 1746. After their deaths, the family title went to her husband's brother, Sir Alexander Dick, 3rd Baronet. He then moved into the family home, Prestonfield House, in Edinburgh.
