Anne Finch, Countess of Nottingham (born October 1668 – died September 26, 1743), was an important lady in English history. She was also known as Anne Hatton before she married. Anne became the second wife of Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham. Together, they had many children, including Daniel Finch, who later became the 8th Earl of Winchilsea and 3rd Earl of Nottingham.

Her Early Life

Anne Hatton was born in October 1668. Her parents were Christopher Hatton, 1st Viscount Hatton, and Lady Cecilia Tufton. Sadly, her mother died in an explosion at Castle Cornet in 1672 when Anne was very young.

Anne's father married again, and she gained two younger half-brothers: William Hatton, 2nd Viscount Hatton and Henry Hatton, 3rd Viscount Hatton. Her family had a long history, with her grandparents being Christopher Hatton, 1st Baron Hatton and Elizabeth Montagu. Her mother's family also came from important lines, including John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet.

Family and Marriage

On December 29, 1685, Anne married Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham. He was more than twenty years older than her. The Earl had been married before, but his first wife, Lady Essex Rich, had passed away in 1684. She left behind one daughter, Lady Mary Finch.

Anne and the Earl of Nottingham had a very large family. She had twenty-two pregnancies, and thirteen of their children survived.

Her Children

Some of Anne's notable children included:

  • Daniel Finch (1689–1769): He became the 8th Earl of Winchilsea. He married twice but did not have any sons.
  • William Finch (1690–1766): He was a diplomat, which means he represented his country in other nations. He married Charlotte Fermor and was the father of George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea.
  • Edward Finch (1697–1771): He also became a diplomat. He later added "Hatton" to his surname, becoming Finch-Hatton. His grandson was George Finch-Hatton, 10th Earl of Winchilsea.
  • Lady Charlotte Finch (1693–1773): She married Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, and they had children.
  • Lady Isabella Finch (1700–1771): She never married and became a Lady of the Bedchamber to Princess Amelia, a member of the royal family.
  • Mary Finch (1701–1761): She married Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham.

A Royal Role

In 1691, Anne was given an important role at the royal court. She was appointed a Lady of the Bedchamber to Mary II of England, who was the Queen at the time. This meant she was a close attendant and companion to the Queen. Anne served in this position until Queen Mary's death in 1694.

Later Life

Lady Nottingham lived a long life, raising her large family and serving the Queen. She passed away on September 26, 1743.
