Anne Gilman (born in 1953) is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She is known for creating large drawings with many layers. She uses pencils, ink, graphite, and even ballpoint pens. Her art often makes you think about journeys, maps, and different landscapes.

Early Life and Education

Anne Gilman studied art at two different colleges. She earned her first art degree (BFA) from the State University of New York at New Paltz. Later, she received a master's degree (MFA) in Painting and Drawing from Brooklyn College. There, she learned from a famous artist named Lee Bontecou.

Career

Anne Gilman's artwork has been shown in many important art magazines and publications, such as Bomb Magazine and Hyperallergic. She also created a special artist book called Bordes deshilachados/Frayed Edges. This book was published in 2001 in Cuba and is written in two languages.

Anne Gilman has received many awards and grants to help her with her art. These include special invitations to places where artists can live and work, like MacDowell (artists' residency and workshop) in 2012 and The Edward F. Albee Foundation in 2010. She also received grants from the Pratt Institute several times.

She is a professor at the Pratt Institute, where she has taught art for over 20 years. She teaches in the Fine Arts Program.
