Anne Yelverton (1628–1698) was an important woman in English history. She held the titles of Countess of Manchester and Countess of Halifax.

Anne Yelverton's Life Story

Anne Yelverton was born in 1628. Her father was Sir Christopher Yelverton, 1st Baronet, and her mother was Anne Twysden.

First Marriage and Family

On June 27, 1655, Anne married Robert Montagu, 3rd Earl of Manchester. Robert was the son of Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester. Anne and Robert had nine children together:

  • Hon. Edward Montagu
  • Hon. Henry Montagu
  • Lady Anne Montagu (born around 1667, died 1720) who married James Howard, 3rd Earl of Suffolk.
  • Charles Montagu, 1st Duke of Manchester (born around 1656, died 1722)
  • Lady Elizabeth Montagu (born around 1682)
  • Lady Catherine Montagu, who married Samuel Edwin.
  • Hon. Robert Montagu (died 1693)
  • Hon. Heneage Montagu (1675–1698)
  • Lady Eleanor Montague (1647-1695) who married Anthony Haggard around 1682.

Robert Montagu, her first husband, passed away in 1683.

Second Marriage and Later Life

Around May 12, 1688, Anne married for a second time to Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax. Charles was the nephew of her first husband's father. This marriage did not have any children.

When Charles Montagu died in 1715, his title of Earl of Halifax passed to his nephew, George Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax. This happened because of a special rule for how titles were passed down.

Anne Yelverton herself died on July 21, 1698.
