Anne de La Tour d'Auvergne (born 1496 – died 1524) was an important noblewoman in France. She was the ruler of Auvergne, known as the Countess of Auvergne, from 1501 until her death in 1524. She also became the Duchess of Albany when she married John Stewart, Duke of Albany. In her marriage papers, she was called 'Anne de Boulogne, daughter of John, Count of Boulogne and Auvergne.'

Who Was Anne de La Tour d'Auvergne?

Anne de La Tour d'Auvergne was a powerful countess in France during the early 1500s. She was born in 1496 and lived for 28 years. Her family, the House of La Tour d'Auvergne, was very important.

As the Countess of Auvergne, she was in charge of a large area of land. This made her a significant figure in French history.

Her Family Background

Anne was the older of two daughters. Her parents were Jean III of La Tour d'Auvergne and Jeanne of Bourbon.

Her younger sister was Madeleine de La Tour d'Auvergne. Madeleine later married Lorenzo II de' Medici. Their daughter was Catherine de' Medici, who would become a famous Queen of France.

Because Anne was the older daughter, she was her father's main heir. This meant she would inherit his titles and lands.

Anne's Marriage

On July 13, 1505, Anne married her first cousin, John Stewart, Duke of Albany. He was a very important person in Scotland.

John Stewart was sometimes next in line to become the King of Scotland. He also sometimes acted as a regent for Scotland. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king is too young or unable to rule. John lived in France for a time, away from Scotland.

Her Death and What Happened Next

Anne de La Tour d'Auvergne died in 1524. She passed away at her castle in Saint-Saturnin.

When Anne died, she had no children of her own. So, her lands and titles, including the county of Auvergne, went to her niece. This niece was Catherine de' Medici, who was born in 1519. Catherine was the daughter of Anne's late younger sister, Madeleine.

Historical Records of Anne

There are old handwritten books, called manuscripts, that tell us about Anne's inheritance. Some of these manuscripts even have pictures of her castles in Auvergne. One manuscript also describes her family history, linking her to a legendary princess from ancient Egypt.

One of these special manuscripts is kept in the Royal Library in the Hague. Another similar book is in the National Library of France. This second book also lists the castles in Auvergne, and it was made for Catherine de' Medici.

We also know that Anne and her husband, the Duke of Albany, were shown in a beautiful stained-glass window. This window was located in a place called Vic-le-Comte.
