Elizabeth Ann Drummond-Hay (born August 4, 1937 – died July 31, 2022), known to many as Anneli Drummond-Hay, was a super talented British horse rider. She was famous for both eventing and show jumping. In 1961, she won the very first Burghley Horse Trials with her amazing horse, Merely-a-Monarch.

Her Early Life

Anneli Drummond-Hay was born in Scotland on August 4, 1937. Her father was James Drummond-Hay. Her mother was Lady Margaret Douglas-Hamilton.

Her Amazing Riding Career

Anneli started riding horses when she was young. She began on polo ponies. When she was 16, she won the European Pony Championship. For three years, she was the top rider in combined training in Britain.

Winning Big Competitions

Anneli won both the Badminton Horse Trials and the first-ever Burghley Horse Trials. She also came in second place five times in these big events.

Later, she switched to show jumping. She won many Grand Prix competitions all over the world. These included events in Brussels, Geneva, Paris, Berlin, Toronto, and South Africa. She also won the Rome Derby twice and the Hickstead Derby.

She toured America and won the Grand Florida Championship. She also won the Madison Square Garden's Championship. And she took home the All American Showjumping Championship.

Representing Great Britain

Anneli was a member of Great Britain's Olympic Nations Cup Team for 14 years. This is a huge honor! She also won the European Show Jumping Championship.

Special Awards and Records

Anneli was named British Sportswoman of the Year three times. She was also South African Sportswoman of the Year eight times.

She received the "Premio Caprilli" award from the Italian Equestrian Federation. This was for her outstanding achievements in riding. The French Federation also gave her the "Golden Spurs" award. This was for her contributions to show jumping.

She won the FEI/Samsung World Challenge four times. Anneli also holds the ladies' world high jump record. She jumped 2.36 meters (about 7 feet 9 inches) with her horse, Sporting Ford!

She was the only rider ever to be considered for the Olympics in three different horse sports. These were Dressage, Showjumping, and 3-Day Eventing, all for the same Olympic Games.

Training Future Riders

Anneli also helped train other riders. She trained the Dutch Junior Showjumping Champion in 2000 and 2001. She also trained the runner-up in the Junior European 3 Day Event in 2004.

Her famous horse, Merely-a-Monarch, was honored in 2005. He was put into the British Horse Society Equestrian Hall of Fame. Anneli herself was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.

Life Outside Competitions

Anneli Drummond-Hay had a special riding qualification called B.H.S.I. She later ran Penny Place Stables in Johannesburg, South Africa. There, she taught students of all ages and skill levels how to ride.

She even got a mention in a funny TV show called Monty Python's Flying Circus!

Even at 79 years old, Anneli was still competing. She rode her horse, Apollo, and often finished in the top three. In 2022, she wrote a book about her life called Merely A Rider.

Anneli Drummond-Hay passed away on July 31, 2022, at the age of 84. She was survived by her husband, Trevor Bern.
