Annette Abigael Hamilton (born Palm) was a Norwegian author and a pioneer in collecting fairy tales. She lived from 1806 to 1879.
Who Was Annette Abigael Hamilton?
Annette Abigael Hamilton was born in a town called Fredrikshald, which is now known as Halden in Norway. Her father was Captain Hans Christian Palm, and her mother was Anne Samuelsen.
She married Captain Wilhelm Hamilton, who was also a publisher. Besides being an author, Annette was also an actress. She enjoyed performing with the dramatic society in Fredrikshald.
A Pioneer in Norwegian Fairy Tales
In 1847, Annette Hamilton's collection of fairy tales was published. Her husband's company helped publish the book. This happened when the dramatic society she was part of was very active.
Annette is considered one of the first people in Norway to write and collect fairy tales. She used the pen name "Abigail," which was a shorter way of saying A. A. Hamilton.
Her Famous Fairy Tale Book
Her fairy tale collection was titled Abigaels Eventyr og Sagn. Gave for Børn. This means "Abigail's Fairy Tales and Legends. A Gift for Children." It was one of the very first fairy tale books published in Norway. The book was sold by a well-known company called J. W. Cappelen.
Many of the stories in her book were traditional Norwegian folk tales. Some of the tales were changed quite a bit by Annette, and others were completely new stories she created herself. For example, stories numbered 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are fairy tales. Number 7 includes ideas from old legends and folk tales. Stories from 8 to 12 are believed to be her own original creations.
One of the tales in her book (on page 34) is similar to a type of story known as "The Clever Man." Another tale (on pages 24-29) is like a story called The Land and Water Ship. These stories are part of a worldwide system for classifying folk tales.
