Annette Schenk Thoma (born January 23, 1886 – died November 26, 1974) was a talented German writer, composer, and expert in folk traditions. She is best known for her special music piece called Deutsche Bauernmesse (which means German Farmers’ Mass). This music was a mass, but it used traditional Bavarian folk songs.

Life and Career

Annette Thoma was born in Neu-Ulm, Germany. Her father was a military officer. She studied English and French in other countries. Later, she married a painter named Emil Thoma and moved to Riedering.

In 1930, Annette Thoma met Paul Kiem, a Bavarian folk musician. They worked together to record local folk music. She wrote a book and many articles about these traditional songs.

In 1933, Thoma composed her famous Deutsche Bauernmesse. She also wrote the words for the very first Salzburg Advent Singing event in 1946.

Annette Thoma received important awards for her work. She got the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1964. In 1974, she received the Bayerischer Poetentaler award.

Her music piece, Die Kleine Messe (The Little Mass), was recorded on several albums:

In 2020, Annette Thoma's Deutsche Bauernmesse was performed by a choir in St. Martin, Moosach.
