Annie Belle Andrews was born in 1959. She is a remarkable leader who served in the United States Navy for 32 years. She reached the high rank of Rear Admiral. This made her the third African-American woman to become a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy.

After her Navy career, she worked for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). There, she helped manage human resources for thousands of employees. Her work focused on people, training, and education in both military and civilian roles.

Annie Andrews' Education Journey

Annie Andrews attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. This was a special school for students who were very good at academics. She graduated from there in 1977.

College and Advanced Degrees

Andrews went to Savannah State University. She earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. Later, she got a master's degree in management from Troy State University.

While serving in the Navy, she continued her education. She earned another master's degree from the Naval War College. This degree was in National Security and Strategic Studies. She also has an honorary doctorate from Wilson College.

Annie Andrews had an impressive career. She served in the U.S. Navy and then worked for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Serving in the U.S. Navy

Andrews joined the Navy in 1983. Her first job was at Naval Station Whiting Field in Florida. She helped with administrative tasks for a training air wing. She also coordinated flight simulators for Helicopter Training Squadron 8.

Her next assignment took her to Hawaii. There, she worked as an intelligence officer. She was stationed at the Joint Intelligence Center Pacific.

Rising to Leadership Roles

After these first assignments, Andrews took on many leadership roles. She became the Director of Counseling and Assistance in Iceland. She also served as an Officer-in-charge in the Philippines.

Later, she moved to Washington, D.C. She held several important positions there. She led the Deserter Apprehension Program. She also became Chief of the Requirements Branch. This branch focused on manpower planning. She then became the Executive Assistant to a high-ranking Navy official.

Andrews moved to Rhode Island for another important role. She was a Senior Fellow in the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group. Before her final Navy role, she directed the Total Force Requirements Division.

Leading Navy Recruiting

Her last area of work in the Navy was recruiting. She was the Commanding Officer of two important centers. These were the Boston Military Entrance Processing and Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes. At Great Lakes, she oversaw the training of over 100,000 sailors.

In 2013, Annie Andrews became a Rear Admiral. She then commanded the United States Navy Recruiting Command. As the top recruiter, she was in charge of all Navy recruiting. This included both active duty and reserve forces. She retired from the Navy in 2015 after 32 years of service.

Working for the Federal Aviation Administration

After leaving the Navy, Andrews began a civilian career. She joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2015. She became the Assistant Administrator for Human Resources Management.

In this role, she managed human resources for the FAA's 46,000 employees. She oversaw employee programs, policies, and compensation. She retired from the FAA in January 2022.
