The Anolis monteverde is a special kind of lizard from the Dactyloidae family. It is often called the Monteverde Anole. This lizard is found only in one specific place, which means it is endemic to Costa Rica.
You can only find the Monteverde Anole in the Tilarán Mountains in the Puntarenas Province of Costa Rica. It lives at high places, between 1,545 and 1,650 meters (about 5,069 to 5,413 feet) above sea level. This makes it a unique creature of the cloud forests in that region.

What is an Anole?
Anoles are a group of lizards that are very common in the Americas. They are known for their ability to change color slightly. They also have a special flap of skin under their throat called a dewlap. Males often use this dewlap to show off to other anoles or to attract a mate.
Anole Characteristics
- Anoles are usually small to medium-sized lizards.
- They have sticky pads on their toes. These pads help them climb trees and other surfaces easily.
- Many anoles eat insects and other small invertebrates.
- They are often found in forests, gardens, and even cities.
Where Does the Monteverde Anole Live?
The Monteverde Anole gets its name from the Monteverde region in Costa Rica. This area is famous for its beautiful cloud forests. Cloud forests are unique because they are often covered in mist and clouds. This creates a very wet and cool environment.
Cloud Forest Home
- The Tilarán Mountains are part of a mountain range in Costa Rica.
- These mountains are home to many different plants and animals.
- The high elevation means the air is cooler and more humid.
- This specific habitat is perfect for the Monteverde Anole.
Why is the Monteverde Anole Special?
The Monteverde Anole was first officially described as a new species in 2009 by a scientist named Gunther Köhler. This means that before 2009, scientists did not know much about this specific lizard. Finding a new species is always exciting for scientists.
Endemic to Costa Rica
Being "endemic" means that a species lives naturally only in one specific place in the world. For the Monteverde Anole, that place is a small part of Costa Rica. This makes it very important to protect its habitat. If its home is damaged, the species could be in danger.
- Protecting endemic species helps keep the balance of nature.
- Costa Rica is known for its amazing biodiversity, meaning it has many different kinds of plants and animals.
- The Monteverde Anole is one more example of the unique wildlife found there.
