Antônio Lima dos Santos, known simply as Lima, was a fantastic Brazilian football player. He was born on January 18, 1942, and passed away on February 3, 2025. Lima was famous for being able to play many different positions on the field. He often played as a defensive midfielder, but he could also play as a full-back (on the sides) or even as a central defender. His ability to play anywhere made him a very valuable player.

Lima's Club Career

Starting Out in Brazil

Lima was born in São Sebastião do Paraíso, a city in Minas Gerais, Brazil. He started his football journey at a young age. He joined the youth team of Juventus-SP. By 1959, he was good enough to play for their main team.

Playing for Santos FC

In 1961, Lima became a key player for Juventus-SP. Soon after, he moved to Santos, one of Brazil's most famous football clubs. At Santos, he first played as a right-back. This was because the team already had a great midfielder and captain named Zito.

Lima moved to his favorite position, defensive midfielder, in 1965. This happened after another famous player, Carlos Alberto Torres, joined the team. Lima stayed with Santos until 1971. During his time there, he played almost 700 matches! He helped Santos win every major title a Brazilian club could win back then.

Winning Big Titles

Some of his biggest wins with Santos included the Intercontinental Cup. They won this important international trophy in 1962 and 1963. In the 1963 final, Lima showed off his amazing versatility. He even played as a striker in that game!

Later Career and Retirement

After leaving Santos in 1971, Lima played for Jalisco in Mexico. In 1974, he came back to Brazil and joined Fluminense. The next year, 1975, he played a couple of matches for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the United States. He finished his football career playing for Portuguesa Santista in Brazil.

Lima's International Career

Lima also played for his country, the Brazil national team. He played in 14 international matches. He was part of the Brazilian team that played in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Lima played in all three of Brazil's matches during that World Cup tournament.

Lima's Passing

Lima passed away on February 3, 2025, when he was 83 years old. He died from kidney disease.
