Anthony A. Beale (born October 22, 1967) is an American politician. He serves as the alderman for the 9th ward in Chicago, Illinois. An alderman is like a city council member. They help make decisions for their local area.

Beale was one of the youngest people elected to the Chicago City Council. He was first elected in 1999. In 2023, he was elected for his seventh term.

Learning and Early Work

Beale went to Corliss High School and graduated in 1985. Later, he studied at Blackburn College.

Before becoming an alderman, Beale worked with computers. He was also a community activist. This means he worked to improve his local community. He helped with efforts to adopt certain local rules in parts of the 9th ward in 1999.

Serving as an Alderman

Anthony Beale became the alderman for the 9th ward in 1999. He has been reelected many times. These elections happened in 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023.

In 1999, his win was a big surprise to many. He defeated Herbert Shaw, whose father had held the seat before.

Beale helped bring new Walmart stores to Chicago. He also suggested using city money to hire private security for shopping areas.

Beale used to lead the Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure. As of 2011, he was part of several important City Council Committees:

  • Budget & Government Operations (about the city's money)
  • Rules and Ethics (about how the council works fairly)
  • Workforce Development & Audit (about jobs and checking city spending)
  • Education & Child Development (about schools and kids)
  • Finance (about city money)
  • Public Safety (about keeping the city safe)

During his time as alderman, Beale has worked to create jobs. He has helped bring new businesses to the ward. These businesses have created over 4,000 new jobs. He also helped get more housing for senior citizens.

In 2008, Beale spent money from his aldermanic account on public relations. This included creating his ward newsletter. In 2012, there was a discussion about a fundraiser he attended. This happened before new rules for the taxicab industry were discussed.

In the 2019 Chicago mayoral election, Beale supported Lori Lightfoot. Later, in November 2019, he voted against her first budget plan. He also disagreed with her about aldermanic prerogative. This is a special power aldermen have over local decisions.

9th Ward Committeeperson Role

In 2000, Beale also became the committeeman for the 9th Ward. This role involves helping to organize the local political party. He has been reelected as committeeperson several times.

Community Involvement

Beale has been active in many community groups. He served on the Board for Redevelopment of the Roseland area. He was also president of a local block club. He is a member of groups like the Rosemoor Community Association and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

In 2013, Beale ran for U.S. Congressman in Illinois' 2nd congressional district. He finished third in that election.

Anthony Beale lives in the Roseland neighborhood. He lives there with his wife, Dana, and their three children. He is also a member of Salem Baptist Church.
