Anthony Calvert (1735–1809) was an English businessman from the 1700s. He was known for his work as a merchant and for his involvement in the trade of enslaved people. He was a partner in a well-known London company called Camden, Calvert and King.

This company was very active in different types of trade. They brought goods like tea from China and cotton from India to England. Anthony Calvert's company also played a part in sending English convicts (people who had broken the law) to faraway places. At first, these people were sent to Africa, and later, they were sent to Australia.

Anthony Calvert's Business

Anthony Calvert's company, Camden, Calvert and King, was a major trading business. They were involved in many different areas of trade. This included importing goods from other countries.

South Sea Whaling

The company also took part in whaling in the late 1700s. Whaling means hunting whales, usually for their oil and blubber. Between 1782 and 1796, the company owned at least six ships used for this trade.

West India Dock Company

Camden, Calvert and King also supported the West India Dock Company. This company built docks where ships could load and unload goods. These docks were very important for trade in London.

Early Career and Partnerships

Anthony Calvert started his career by making several trips along trade routes in the early 1760s. These routes were used for the trade of enslaved people.

In 1766, he bought a ship named the Charlotte. He became the captain of this ship. Later, in 1773, he started a business with Thomas King. Together, they took charge of another ship called the Three Good Friends.
