Becoming an Earl
Anthony Francis Nugent came from a long line of important Irish families. His family was related to the Earls of Westmeath. However, the main title had passed to a different branch of the family. His own family held a different title, Baron Nugent of Riverston.
His parents were William Thomas Nugent, 5th Baron Nugent of Riverston, and Catherine Bellew. They lived in County Galway, Ireland.
When his relative, George Nugent, the 1st Marquess of Westmeath, passed away, Anthony inherited the title. He became the 9th Earl of Westmeath on May 5, 1871. He also became the 14th Baron Delvin at the same time. The higher title of Marquess ended with George Nugent.
Family Life
Anthony Francis Nugent married Anne Catherine Daly. She was from Raford, County Galway. Together, they had several children:
- Malachy Daly Nugent: He was a captain in the army. He passed away in China in 1862.
- Julia Catherine Anne Nugent: She was born in 1830 and passed away in 1859. She married George Browne, the 3rd Marquess of Sligo, but they did not have children.
- Mary Frances Nugent: She was born in 1831 and passed away in 1892. She married Sir Thomas Burke, 3rd Baronet, and they had six children.
- William St George Nugent: He was born in 1832 and became the 10th Earl of Westmeath after his father. He passed away in 1883.
- Charles Anthony Nugent: He was born in 1836 and passed away in 1906. He married Gertrude O'Conor, but they did not have children.
- Olivia Jane Nugent: She was born in 1838 and passed away in 1903. She married Patrick Joseph Mahon Power and had children.
