Sir Anthony Rous: A Powerful Figure in Old England

Sir Anthony Rous was born the oldest son of Richard Rous. He inherited land and wealth from his uncle, John Rous, sometime after 1577. In 1603, he was given the special title of "Sir" when he was knighted. He owned a lot of land, nearly 10,000 acres, which made him one of the richest people in Cornwall during his time.

His Time in Parliament

Sir Anthony Rous was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for East Looe in Cornwall in 1584. Later, in 1604, he became an MP for the whole county of Cornwall.

He also held the important local role of High Sheriff of Cornwall. A High Sheriff was like a chief law enforcement officer and administrator for a county. He served in this position twice: from 1587 to 1588 and again from 1602 to 1603.

Family and Descendants

Sir Anthony Rous married Elizabeth Southcote. She was the daughter of Thomas Southcote, who came from Bovey Tracey and Mohuns Ottery. Sir Anthony and Elizabeth had four sons together. Their first son was Ambrose Rous (who passed away in 1620), and their last son was Francis Rous (around 1581–1659).
