Antonín Kachlík (born February 26, 1923 – died April 20, 2022) was a famous Czech film director and screenwriter. He was the person who guided the making of a movie and wrote the story for it. He directed 21 films during his career, from 1948 to 1987. In 1973, he was part of the group that judged films at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival.

Growing Up and Education

Antonín Kachlík was born in Rozdělov, which is now part of Kladno-Rozdělov in the Czech Republic. He lived in a small town called Malá Dobrá until 1931. Then, his family moved to the big city of Prague. He went to a trade academy in Prague-Karlín to study.

During World War II, when he was a young man, Kachlík joined a secret group. This group worked against the government that was in power at the time. He helped by printing and sharing secret papers. After finishing school in 1942, he was made to work for Germany. He joined fire brigades in an area called Ruhr. His job was to help clean up after air raids by the Allied Forces.

After the war ended, he went to a college that focused on politics and social sciences. In 1946, he decided to study film at the Film Academy (FAMU). He finished his studies there in 1950.

After graduating, Kachlík moved to Zlín. He worked at the Workers’ Theatre as a dramaturge. This means he helped choose plays and prepare them for the stage. Later, from 1952 to 1954, he served in the military.

Antonín Kachlík's Film Career

Antonín Kachlík started his career in films by working as a second director. He learned from experienced directors like Josef Mach and Bořivoj Zeman.

His first movie as a main director was a drama called Červnové dny in 1961. He continued to direct films until 1988. Besides directing, Kachlík also wrote many screenplays for movies between 1961 and 1983. He wrote five books in his lifetime, with the last one published in 2003. From 1971 to 1992, he also taught at the FAMU Film Academy, sharing his knowledge with new filmmakers.

One of his films, Dvacátý devátý, was a movie about a communist leader named Klement Gottwald. This film received some criticism.

Antonín Kachlík's Family Life

Antonín Kachlík passed away on April 20, 2022, when he was 99 years old. He was married to an actress named Květoslava Houdlová. Their daughter, Kateřina Kachlíková [cs], was born in 1953. She grew up to become a talented Czech mezzo-soprano, which is a type of singer.
