John Slaughter found Apache May in Mexico. She had been left alone by her birth parents. John brought her back to Arizona. When she was adopted, she also became a distant relative of the famous American pioneer, Daniel Boone. She was his great-great-great-granddaughter.
The Slaughters named her Apache May because of her background. They also believed she was born in May.
